Radio: All Gold Tomato Products

I'm ashamed to say that this is a jingle (though not ashamed enough not to post it). It's in the style of the All Gold Share the Delight campaign - cheesy singing necessary.

A copywriter who hates advertising

I hate advertising. And I'll tell you why. Agencies want awards. That's how they build their reputation. Creatives are pressurised to come up with award-winning ideas. Now, I'm a girl and as such like the shiny things but here's the problem (or at least at the agency I'm at): you either create ideas for NGO's that the agency pays for (these are generally cheap, once-off things) or you try create ideas for existing clients and get them to pay for them. Often this leads to cheap but smart little ideas that are awarded the one year and forgotten the next. And here's the rub: They do not solve problems. They do not leave a real lasting impact on anyone or anything except the creative's ego.

I don't believe in scam adds or once-off ideas purely for awards. I want to create brands that people fall in love with. Brands people believe in and whose logos people want tattoo-ed on their pimpled butts. Now, this might sound a little idealistic but, hey, I'm a dreamer. I wouldn't be in this business if I weren't.

If you look at the Grand Prix winners at Cannes (Gatorade Replay, EOS Photochains, the Nike Livestrong chalkbot), they impacted people's lives. They allowed people to relive their youths, commemorate loved ones and give messages of hope. They allowed artists to be inspired and their talent exposed.

This is the kind of advertising I want to do. Advertising that changes lives. That creates memories. That becomes iconic. Advertising that impacts people in a meaningful way.

If I fail to do this, I will be nothing more than a magpie chasing after shiny objects.

Excuse the rant.

Tracey. Over and out.

It's a creative team thing

There is a phenomenon among a few creative teams: they tend to arrive at work dressed in the same colours on the same day. Unplanned. I have some photos of us for proof. Madness.

My favourite poster of all time :)

TBWA\Whybin, New Zealand

My lovely art director, Natalie le Roux, and I were lucky enough to be sent to TBWA\Whybin in Auckland, New Zealand. We were working on the pitch for the ASB bank and wow, what an experience. The agency is amazing and you can’t help but feel inspired. People are so passionate there – some even have tattoos of the company’s logo. We’ve learned a lot (it was such an honour working with the likes of Andy Blood and Karen Maurice-O'Leary) and hopefully made some friends along the way. Thanks guys, ‘twas too, too awesome and we have never met such generous and such damned nice people.

TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris is No. 1

Due to recent award shows, I now work at the Number 1 Ad Agency IN THE WORLD (yes, it deserves Caps):

Congrats to all :)

My poster signed by some famous guy

A boss of mine went to London and brought back a signed poster of an illustration I did for Adidas. Thanks Mr. Big-Football-Star-Guy.

Video: Hanging pictures on the wall

Just a lil something-something we did the other day for an internal competition.

Design: He's a boob

We have an internal competition for a font design and this is my attempting to be a designer. It's dedicated to the guy who downloaded 19Gb of porn at work, the guy who put vintage porn on the shared drive (bushy stuff!), the boss who asks lil innocent girls about cocks and the guy who unknowingly forwarded porn to the whole company, including his pregnant wife. This is for you guys. I call it boob. You can see why.

Oh, and the "x" is the tape you would find over a stripper's nipple.

Poetry: A winner

A while ago, we had a little internal competition where we were briefed to write a love poem; the first line had to be the typical lovey dovey story and the second, the exact opposite. I won with this:

Oh, how I adore this lustful sin;
Pity I have to ask: "Is it in?"

Please note: this was based on a friend's experience, not my own.

TVC: Visa Go Fans for Fifa 2010

This is a series of international ads that we had to adapt to the South African market for the 2010 World Cup.

Commercial artwork

Some commercial work I've done... clients include The Windmill Casino in Bloemfontein, The Gypsy Lounge restaurant at the Blubird centre and a private client. Other work and my personal stuff is on my other blog, tracey-lauren.blogspot.com. Yes, I might be slightly schizophrenic :)

Illustration: Ace packs for TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris

Just an illustration I did for Ace mielie meal. It was a pack of cards with different illustrators doing each house/set. Eish... I don't know my card terminology.

Advertorial: IEC

We were briefed to create an advertorial in a Grade 9 Maths booklet for the IEC. We figured we'd put in a kid's terms. Illustration was mainly done by my lovely art director, Natalie Leroux, but I helped too.

The copy reads:

Freedom is not just being able to get into that club or being able to live without your parents hassling you. Freedom is not just being free from homework and chores. It's not just being able to listen to music your parents hate or being able to wear your shirt untucked.

Freedom is about making decisions for yourself. It's deciding to make South Africa the country you want it to be. It's deciding to vote. And this is why the IEC exists - to make sure everyone is free to be heard.

Night of a 1000 drawings

So, I received this email today:

And it looks super cool. I love the event, love the idea, love the cause, so I thought I'd sms some mates to join me this Sunday, telling them to come doodle with me by the lake. Only after my thumb hit the send button did I realise that my predictive text didn't spell out "doodle," but "fondle."

... Lovely. Just lovely.
